FAB Subtitler Professional Edition: The Best Choice for Open, Teletext, DVB and Closed Captions Subt

There are many ways to add subtitles to videos, and these can depend on the channel you are broadcasting on (online platforms, media players, cinema, etc.) and why you are broadcasting: whether the video is for professional purposes or otherwise.

The type of subtitles used can vary depending on the broadcasting channel, and on who is involved in the subtitling process as a whole. This is a huge, diverse sector that requires a high degree of professionalism.

FAB Subtitler Professional Edition

In the following sections we will look at how to add subtitles to a video using one of the most used channels, YouTube, and using FAB Subtitler, a professional subtitling programme. We will compare the two and try to discern what advantages each solution has over the other. To do so, we will use the subtitles for an Italian advert that became one of the most talked-about and successful of recent years: The Asteroid* by Buondì Motta!

FAB Subtitler is one of the best subtitling programs available on the market. It is professional software, only compatible with Windows, and it is not free. The programme works with all types of subtitles: open, teletext, DVB, subtitles for the deaf, subtitles for online broadcasting, subtitles for cinema, subtitles for DVD and Blu-ray.

YouTube is of course one of the most-used channels on the internet. Therefore, uploading a video to YouTube can be a great choice, as it can reach a very wide audience. However, this does not mean that YouTube subtitles will be your best option. Quite the opposite. It is an inaccurate, unprofessional tool with limited capabilities.

Because only one-third of video viewers speak English, more and more companies are turning to AVT to increase their global views and engagement. To take advantage of this growing demand, language services professionals need the latest web-based platforms and enhanced software solutions to successfully enter the AVT market.

I have implemented many of the professional subtitling formats in the application which I produce and have come to the realization that with the exception of only two or three formats, USF would be suitable as an intermediate format between the others and graphical representation. Since the software I develop is in use by many post processing facilities preparing subtitles for digital broadcast on DVB networks, I'd like to use my "pull" to try and make USF the defacto standard since the alternatives are closed formats from FAB and Screen Subtitling and they lack the richness of USF and are typically binary coded using unusual character encodings. An example of this format is PAC which is, in my personal experience the most used subtitling format in the scandinavian professional world. Sadly, formats such as .860 and .890 which are ancient also occur far too often.

An alternative suggestion would be to suggest that a single line of text would consume 14 lines of text from absolute top to absolute bottom of the screen. The justification of this suggestion even though it isn't mathematically correct in relation to the previous suggestion is, if vertical margins are defined in styles other than the "default" style, text rendered in one region will be disproportionate to text rendered in other regions of different styles. If the subtitler would have prefered different font sizes, there's more than a few ways they could have dealt with that and the vertical margins would be less refined of an approach.
